Recovered from a battlefield shrapnel wound, Confederate soldier Bill Stamford gets a new assignment: newspaper liaison with the War Department in Richmond. He and his new wife Franny must navigate the dangerous currents of wartime Richmond, where life comes cheap and morning often finds dead bodies in alleyways. For Bill, duty will mean interviewing soldiers in the breastworks and an unexpected sea voyage to England on a spy mission. In the closing days of the war, as Union soldiers advanced on Richmond, Bill and Franny struggle to survive amid the chaos of rioting townspeople.
